Memcap Capacitor Elements

The Memcap range of capacitors are produced using well proven metallised film technology. This utilises the process of depositing, by vacuum evaporation, a thin layer of metal on one side of a polypropylene film.
A capacitor element is obtained by winding two polypropylene films together. The plates of the capacitor are formed by the metal layer and the film itself becomes dielectric.

These are dry modular units which can form the basis of any power factor correction system. With a range of voltages from 230 up to 550V they can be used in both standard and special applications.
The large range of sizes make these the most versatile of all our capacitor product ranges.

Memcap 20 Three Phase

A range of three phase elements that can be used for individual correction of the smaller items of plant. The units are again dry and come complete with internally connected discharge resistors. With the added benefit of a terminal cover these units can be used internally in control panels or alternatively they can be installed alongside the item of plant they are correcting.

Designed for the discerning panel builder where the number of interconnections are to be reduced. A cost effective labour saving device for all panel builders.
The units come in a range of sizes and voltages to suit all applications. Dependent upon need, the unit can be either 'dry' or vegetable oil impregnated. The units come complete with internally connected discharge resistors.

Specifications

Self Healing
The most important feature of a metallised film capacitor is its ability to restore its electrical properties even after the occurrence of a short circuit between the plates. If a minor fault develops in the capacitor the metal layer will vaporise in the area of the breakdown. This will remove the fault and allow the capacitor to continue operating.

Construction
Capacitor elements are enclosed into an insulated container before being fitted into an aluminium can where they are impregnated with either a polyurethane resin or a non toxic biodegradable vegetable oil. Both impregnants are environmentally friendly. The use of the insulated container and impregnating medium provides a double layer of insulation between the cores and the case. Use of resin gives the capacitor good resistance to vibration. The capacitor assembly is fitted with a safety device.

Safety Device
The capacitor incorporates a special, patented, safety device which disconnects both connections to the element, in case of element breakdown, without affecting the case insulation, thus preventing the capacitor from exploding or burning. In the case of a permanent short circuit the current causes the dielectric to decompose, forming gas. This produces a pressure build up which expands part of the lid, where the terminals are mounted, breaking the internal connections and stopping current flow. The device is designed in different sizes for each size of capacitor to obtain the most effective response with both high and low short circuit currents up to 10,000A.

To enable the over pressure protection device to operate, a gap of at least 20mm must be left above the elements.

Important
When capacitors are installed on networks containing harmonics they may require special precautions, especially when there is a risk of resonances.
